I know that this is a great group, but when I experience how quick and generous you are with your help....well I am once again impressed!!! Thank each one of you that contributed. I hope this may be of use to others. Here we go...not only are there lists of search engines, but many sites to evaluate and rank them! This is from my web site at http://geocities.com/thslib452/internetj l.html Search Engines http://directory.google.com/ http://florin.syr.edu/webarch/searchpro/ boolean_tutorial.html http://home.sprintmail.com/~debflanagan/ main.html Finding It Online: Web Search Strategies http://infomine.ucr.edu/ for academic information http://members.home.net/albeej/ Needle in a Cyberstack Web Directory http://nuevaschool.org/~debbie/library/r esearch/adviceengine.html categorized by the type of search For example, general information, maps, biographical information, etc. http://websearch.about.com/internet/webs earch/ http://www.alltheweb.com Fast Search/Alltheweb http://WWW.ALTAVISTA.COM/ http://www.askjeeves.com Ask Jeeves http://www.beaucoup.com/engbig.html Beaucoup http://www.deja.com/usenet DejaNews for searching Usenet http://www.directhit.com Direct Hit http://WWW.DOGPILE.COM/ http://www.ebig.com / Britannica Internet Search Engine http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Column/9 885/12__search_engines.htm Mr. K's lists of search engines for research http://www.google.com Google http://www.inference.com/ Inference Find does a parallel (meta) search of other search engines http://www.infind.com/ Inference Find http://WWW.METACRAWLER.COM/index.html http://www.northernlight.com Northern Light http://www.oingo.com Oingo http://www.searchengineguide.org Search engine guide http://www.searchengines.net Search engines net http://www.surfwax.com/servlet/home SurfWax http://www.teleport.com/~skerlin/search. html For search engines information (including a wide range of guides on effective use of search engines) http://www.web-search.com/ This site gives you about 10 search engines. The librarian presented at a conference I went to . Look over her entire website. Lots of good stuff we can use on it. http://www.roadway.com/shippers/sbrc_1.h tml http://www.lookoff.com/ The best one I know is www.searchenginewatch.com It has reports rating various search engines as well as an e-mail newsletter that you can subscribe to. http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/cu rrent.html http://www.mindspring.com/~el-announce/ Kathy Schrock's (http://school.discovery.com/schrockguid e/ ), I found a new one this week that is very good. It's http://home.sprintmail.com/~debflanagan/ main.html There are lots of other good sites too, but I liked Deb Flanagan's for a good over all view. I have some sites linked from this address: http://www.n-polk.k12.ia.us/Pages/Depart ments/Media/eval.html Another excellent site is "Choosing the Best Search Engine for your Purpose" which organizes websites by what you are looking for. the address is as follows: http://nuevaschool.org/%7Edebbie/library /research/adviceengine.html http://www.foley.gonzaga.edu/search.html This site provides links to some sites that have done comparisons of many of the most popular search engines. http://www.baylor.edu/Library/BeyondLib/ SrchEngEval.html This site provides a list of criteria that can be used to evaluate newly-developed search engines. http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~bwp2/isearch3.ht ml This site provides a list of criteria for evaluating search engines in general. http://inforpeople.org/scr/chart.html For your students I'd recommend tools such as kids click - It also gives reading levels so staff will find it valuable too http://sunsite.berlkely.edu/kidsclick Classroom Connect magazine has information about tools in the most recent issue that may be of interest. Kathy Schrock has referenced a lot of useful stuff research engines at www.school.discovery.com/schrockguide/yp /iypsrch.html I use it frequently to get updated on search engines. http://www.zdnet.com/searchiq/ http://www.zdnet.com/searchiq/news-se/in dex.html http://www.sosig.ac.uk/desire/internet-d etective.html Terrie Hinojosa Baker 6th Grade Campus LaPorte, Texas hinojosa_baker@yahoo.com _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
