AS far as the new first lady and her former role as a librarian goes it =
seems that may work against her and us. It the NYT yesterday, someone was =
quoted as saying, "let her stick to her books.." in reply to Laura Bush's =
position on abortion (It seems she is pro choice). The book reference =
shows what the general public thinks of librarians. Too bad.

There are a few things about Laura Bush which we might discuss =
which are
entirely germane to a professional listserv.
If she is to be considered a "voice" for the profession, or even a
representative of it, or even if she is just a former librarian currently,
er, receiving a lot of publicity, we may legitimately make certain =
inquiries:
l.How long was she in the profession? How does her length of =
service
compare with others who in some way represent the profession in the public
eye?
2.What sort of qualifications were necessary to serve as a school
librarian at the time she did? I think this might serve as the springboard
for a interesting discussion-comparing what is necessary to become
certified in various states of the US, or countries of the world for that
matter.
3.How, if at all, has she used her "bully pulpit" to advance the =
causes
dear to the hearts of school librarians?

Apologies to anyone who considers this beating the proverbial dead =
horse
but I've been to busy to read my email for the past two weeks until
tonight.....
