Some time ago I requested help in finding a new book for our 10th grade
English class. We are looking to replace "The Women of Brewster Place"
with a novel that is more focussed on the female as hero, rather than as
victim. These were your suggestions. Many thanks!

Their Eyes Were Watching God (Zora Neale Hurston)
Mama Day (Gloria Naylor)
Beloved (Toni Morrison)
Praisesong for the Widow (Paule Marshall )
Paradise (Toni Morrison)
Coffee Will Make You Black (April Sinclair)
In Our Mothers Gardens (Alice Walker)
Jus' Plain Folks (Alice Walker)
Of Mules and Men (Zora Neale Hurston)
What looks like crazy on an ordinary day (Pearl Cleage)
The Bluest Eye (Toni Morrison)
A Girl Named Disaster (Nancy Farmer)

Authors:

Paule Marshall
Maya Angelou
Toni Cade Bambera
Terry McMillan
