Netters,

I have been weeding lately knowing that we will possibly (probably) be
automating this summer. I have been pulling non-fiction books that look
pretty old and have not been checked out in, at least, the last 10 years.

I have had two teachers come to me very upset because the parapro that ran
the library before me did not have teachers "check the books out." They
just took what they needed. Therefore, books that look like they haven't
been checked out since 1977 really have been by these teachers.

I have asked for suggestions from them on books that they know they use all
the time so that I can replace them with new ones. They don't think I
should spend the money to do that. They think the books are good enough.
In my opinion, these books are not worth leaving on the shelf. The
illustrations are out-of-date and are usually drawings. (You know--girls in
short skirts with bows, boys wearing sweater vests.) The information may
still be accurate, but the books LOOK really old. Help me out. Who is
right? Should I just put them back and shut up? Do I leave them off the
shelf? I offered to donate them to the grade levels, but they insist that
these books cover a wide-range of grades. How do I convince them otherwise?

Please email me directly with any suggestions.
