TARGET:Books on states for H.S.

We have a history teacher that has his students do a project on the states
(U.S.). Each student selects a state and does an overview that includes
historical and recreational sites, state government, physical
characteristics, etc.

Can any of you suggest a book or series of books on states for high school
students?
