This list has come through again! My student is overwhelmed by your knowledge and generosity! Thanks to all who responded. On 1/30/01 I asked what the MS in the name for the font comic sans MS stands for. This was for a high school student doing research in my middle school library for her English class. thank you to all who responded. We have the information and citations we need! I tried to reply a thank you to all who answered. If I missed anyone I apologize. Thanks so much for your help! Boy, was I surprised by the number of responses I received to my query! We had looked in the dictionary, in books about printing, online in computer dictionaries and at 3 search engines asking about the font name, and again asking about fonts and typefaces. NO LUCK with reliable information, lots of offers to download fonts. On 1/30/01 and 1/31/01 many people responded with information suggesting that the MS was for either manuscript or Microsoft. These were our 2 best guesses as well. We found the sans means without in French from my years of French and a French-English dictionary ; serif is the small stems on typeface at the top and bottom, as seen in Courier and Times New Roman fonts - from the unabridged Webster's dictionary;we thought that comic probably referred to the "fun" aspect of the look of the type. All this we had, but not the MS. Shirlee Carlberg wrote on !.30/01: This address has the info you need. http://www.microsoft.com/typography/css/gallery/spec2.htm When I went to this site it explains that the comic is from comic book type which the creator, Vincent Connare was attempting to copy, adding the MS for Microsoft as a Microsoft employee. There is information about Verdanna, New Roman and Impact fonts at this site. The main page is : http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ from that site you can find links to a wealth of information about true type fonts! This information also came from others. And another site about fonts with lots of good information was sent by Dan Walker: Try the link: http://nwalsh.com/comp.fonts/FAQ/ this site offers great information about fonts as well. Thanks again!
