Thanks to all who sent genealogy sites and software recommendations. One of the most mentioned was http://www.familysearch.org/ which is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In addition to getting information from the web site, they have Family History Centers all over the country with computer information, CD's, microfilms, and books. If the local Family History Centers do not have a microfilm or book, they can get it from the Family History Library for a small mailing fee. Except for this, all of their services are free. They also have a Personal Ancestry File that can be downloaded to organize family histories. The site at http://www.cyndislist.com is another free site recommended by several people. The site at http://www.ancestry.com is very complete, but a year's subscription is $69.95. You can register for a 14-day free trial. The following list came out of the December issue of School Library Media Activities Monthly. There are activities, additional web sites, and lesson plans that accompany the list. www.CyndisList.com/kids.htm www.execpc.com/~dboals/geneo.html www.myhistory.org www.ngsgenealogy.org http://home.earthlink.net/~howardorjeff/instruct.htm http://rootsweb.com www.firstct.com/fv/tmaps.html www.oplin.lib.oh.us (select genealogy from the Topics) www.lds.org/familyhistory http://home.istar.ca/~ljbritt/ http://home.cnet.com/internet/0-3805-7-1426526.html www.nara.gov www.usgenweb.net http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~sam/occupation.html www.behindthename.com www.nara.gov/genealogy/soundex/soundex.html http://clanhuston.com/name/namehist.htm As mentioned above, the Personal Ancestry File from Familysearch.com can be downloaded and is free. This is a Windows based program and there are also accompanying files that can be downloaded, depending upon how detailed a user wants to be. This file can be downloaded in several languages. Another suggestion for a Windows program is Family Tree Maker. The program Reunion was suggested for Macintosh users. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Madeline L. Buchanan, Library Media Specialist W. J.
