Thanks to all those who posted about opening a new middle school library media center. Here is the result: We had a new K-5 building open 2 years ago. The library was the last thing that was opened and we had plenty of time to get things open. They did not put too much pressure on us. As far as the collection goes we went with Follett. They sent us a core collection list, we added and deleted items, put in the order and they came out and opened all of the boxes and shelved all of the materials. they came barcoded. We were able to do an inventory as soon as they were done to assure that everything was included in the order and we were good to go. We are building another new K-5 building and we will probably do the same thing. I would be interested in any additional postings regarding this subject. ****************** When I started I had Bound to Stay Bound send me a list of books for beginning a new library. This was a large print out with annotations of reviews. It was very helpful. I didn't have to order multiple resource books those first few years. You might also check out some of the articles at my site. Don't forget the archives. There are helpful reviews of magazines and non-fiction books. Pace e Bene (Peace and Blessings), Paula S.W. How I envy you. I've always dreamed of opening a new school library. The only thing I know is many big companies offering Start Up or Core Collections and services for new libraries. I'm sure you know this. There are many great reading list sites for librarians BY librarians. Frederick Mueller's website has his reviews -- great stuff! Teenhoopla is a good place, too. ********* Follett is wonderful in working with you and your collection. ******* Thanks, Lindy Pals, Library Media Specialist Jefferson Middle School Jefferson, Georgia lindypals@hotmail.com _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
