At our school we have a formal library orientation for grade nine students. We
ask English teachers to bring their classes to the library at pre-arranged
times. The students see a powerpoint presentation on the location of resources
and other aspects of being in the library (e.g. computers for school work
only), then in partners they answer research questions in six different areas.
Those who complete the research questionaire have their answers put into a
pile. One is drawn and the lucky partners have the choice of a gift( poster,
book or magazine) Every student in the class is also given a research folder
developed by the Ontario School Library Association. This is a wonderful
resource that has the stages and steps of research printed on it. Inside the
folder is a brochure about the library and a colourful little card on how to
do well in school (developed by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers
Federation). Because electronic databases are relatively new (we've used
Electric Library and Ebscohost) we have produced handouts and done workshops
on their use with senior students as well.
