Folks,
I'm trying hard to be as helpful as I can to faculty regarding copyright
issues, but every once in a while I get stuck on something that really
isn't addressed specifically in any of my sources...so I turn to the
mavens for your thoughts....

Firstly, I understand fully about teachers doing photocopying, and why
there are limits. I know they are to limit copying to one chapter of a
book, etc., and why they need to be made aware that they aren't to create
anthologies, etc. I try to explain to them that they don't want to affect
the market for the material, especially when it's available in print. But
how would you advise this teacher? We're a private school, so the students
will be buying their books in the fall. A teacher of an AP course wants
some summer reading assigned from the book which will be used next year,
so he wants to copy TWO chapters from the book and hand the packets out to
students for summer reading. My first thought is that it violates the "one
chapter only" rule, but then again, the books will be purchased by each
student upon return to school, so nothing is being taken away from the
author(s) monetarily (at least that would be the teacher's argument). Does
it violate the SPIRIT of the guidelines??? My guess is that the books
aren't due to arrive until the summer begins and the teacher wants the
students to leave next week with the readings in-hand. What do you all
think? TIA!
Jody
