>My computer froze and then shut down. When I turned it back on it's operating in "safe mode". How do I turn off the safe mode???? I tried shutting down the computer and then restarting it but that didn't work. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Go into Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager. Look for duplicates of devices (three CD-ROM drives, three mice, three monitors, three floppy drives, etc...) Delete any duplicates by highlighting the extra entry and clicking on Remove. Then reboot and see if you can boot in standard mode. If you have Windows 98 you can also fix or restore a previous Registry by booting to the DOS prompt and typing: Scanreg /fix or scanreg /restore. If none of those repair techniques work, do a refresher reinstall of Windows from the CD going over the same directory that Windows is currently installed. That way you will probably fix the problem and not lose your preferences and other programs. But as always with any serious OS troubleshooting, backup any personal data in Safe Mode while you still can do so.
