Many thanks to all:
the book is:  The Sweet Hereafter, by Russell Banks.

Several people also suggested recommending the title to teach *points of
view.*
And we also discovered that since *Google* searches fuill text, it can be
useful for locating plot descriptions and plagiarizations.

Who says we never stop learning?!?!
