In my personal opinion (and I'm not a copyright lawyer) I would say your graduate project looks protected under three provisions of Fair Use: see http://rustysmith.com/fairuse/index.html The one area of the four main Fair Use guidelines where I see some question is the third one: "the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole." Your use of the doll as the narrator and guide represents a large portion of your product. To be completely free of any potential copyright problems it would be a good idea to obtain permission from the doll manufacturer. I would say your chances of getting a positive response would be excellent as a video would be free advertising and they might like a copy for their own use. I'm not sure how much the books would figure into this issue and perhaps other LM_NET members will comment on that aspect.
