Off topic Where to stay in Savannah

Please forgive me for this off topic request. but since it is summer I
thought it would be ok.  A friend and I are going to Savannah in July and
are wondering where a good location to stay is?  It is best to stay downtown
in the historic district, or perhaps out on Tybee Island?  Is the historic
district within walking distance of most everything we would like to see,
and then we could just plan a day at the beach.  Should we stay on the
outskirts of town.  I think we will probably stay most of the time in
Savannah with perhaps a road trip to Beaufort.  Any advice or suggestions of
places to stay would be great.  We would be happy with something around
100 - 150 per night.  Thanks for any info you might have.
