Robert -

I agree with your comments that-

> Our jobs do have a large 'nonteaching' component that isn't covered when a
> sub is in the room. Principal needs to know what parts of your position the
> sub can't be expected to do.

However I was amused by your comments about "Those (subs) that scoot to
the teacher room or library office don't make it to
the request list."

In my district we are have such a substitute shortage that we are
reduced to hiring just about anyone. A recent substitute hire was an
elderly gentleman who was placed in a First Grade classroom. His only
teaching experience had been subbing. When the teacher returned the
following day the kids all complained that all the sub did was read to
them. Then they added indignantly, "And he didn't even show us the
pictures!"

I wish I had the luxury of choosing a substitute. Often the "good"
substitutes are in great demand. Even if we request them for the Media
Center, there is always the possibility that they will be removed to a
class where there is a greater need for an experienced person.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you have a choice between
"good" and "bad" substitutes, count your blessings.
