I have only a single door to the library, and I keep it locked, but
standing open. People can come and go without my help, but in case of an
emergency whoever is closest to the door can slam it shut. This is my third
year here, and we've only come close to a lockdown once in that time. The
lockdown order hadn't been issued yet when the escaped con crashed his
stolen vehicle and was recaptured. Since our school sits right on US 65, we
have a lot of traffic past us, and we could be a tempting hostage site.
Fortunately for us, the sherriff's wife and a deputy sherriff's wife are
both teachers here, and their husbands often need to talk to them, so a
sherriff's vehicle parked in front of the school is a common sight. I
suspect that that might discourage any random unfriendly visitors.
