AASL Members: I am Marilyn McCroskey, AASL representative on the CIP (Cataloging in Publication) Advisory Group for the Library of Congress. I'd like to pass on some information about CIP. CIP is 30 years old. And CIP is going electronic! See below. CATALOGING IN PUBLICATION (CIP) Cataloging in Publication is a bibliographic record prepared by the Library of Congress for a book that has not yet been published. When the book is published, the publisher includes the CIP data on the copyright page, facilitating book processing for libraries and book dealers. The CIP record includes bibliographic information about the book and subject headings and classification numbers assigned by the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress also distributes these records in machine-readable form to large libraries, bibliographic services, and book vendors around the world. Many of these organizations redistribute these records in products and services designed to alert the library community to forthcoming publications and to facilitate book ordering. For more information on CIP, see the Web site: http://cip.loc.gov/cip/ 30 YEARS OF CIP As a former school media specialist and now University cataloger and library science instructor, over the years I have appreciated the efforts of the Library of Congress to provide Cataloging in Publication data in books. In the days when I typed thousands of catalog cards for materials in my one-person school media center, I had no other source of cataloging information but CIP and my own brain. CIP really helped! I know CIP continues to help schools prepare cataloging records when it is not possible to purchase MARC records or catalog card sets. At the University, we use CIP records in OCLC for very new books, and this enables us to get these books to the shelves quickly. The LC CIP program is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The new CIP bulletinboard is: http://www.bulletinboards.com/cips30th THANKS FOR CIP Please take a moment to look at the new CIP bulletinboard. The CIP division works extraordinarily hard to catalog juvenile materials so that school media specialists can have good cataloging records for their books. A word of thanks to LC and to your favorite publishers for their partnership in CIP would be much appreciated. Many such thank-you notes are posted on the CIP bulletinboard. All of the thank you notes will be gathered together and presented to CIP publishers attending ALA San Francisco in June 2001 and to LC staff at the Library of Congress in July 2001. ATTEND CIP EVENTS AT ALA IN SAN FRANCISCO Friday, June 15, 2001, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Reception to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cataloging in Publication Program, hosted by Quality Books, at the San Francisco Marriott. Monday, June 18, 2:00-4:00 p.m. ALCTS program on CIP, Moscone Convention Center, Room 306. John Celli, Chief of the Cataloging in Publication Division; Craig Van Dyck, Vice President of Manufacturing, Scientific, Technical, Medical Publishing, at John Wiley & Sons; and Pat Thomas, 44-year veteran librarian and Margaret Mann Citation recipient, will trace milestones of the CIP program and present a new program, New Books. New Books will build on the CIP program and provide publishers opportunities to post a wide array of bibliographic information about forthcoming books on the Library of Congress homepage while enabling readers to request these books directly from the homepage. SEND ME YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT CIP As your representative on the CIP Advisory Group, I'd like to receive your comments about Cataloging in Publication. I appreciate the opportunity to serve as AASL representative.
