In both of my libraries we use the paint stick kind on shelf markers.  Sometimes 
(as time allows) we paint them bright colors just for a bit of fun.  The kids are 
instructed (beginning in K) in the appropriate use.  Students that use them for 
swords or whacking are sent to their tables and are not allowed to checked that 
period.  They may come down later though.  I don't really have that much trouble.  
Things don't always get put back perfectly, but as my assistant shelves, she 
reshelves what needs to be reshelved and tidies up.  I explain about the need to 
put them back
because all the books have an address (call number) just like their houses do, so 
that people can find them easily.  Seems to work and gives even the kinderkids an 
introduction to call numbers and why the library is arranged the way it is.
