I think a major problem with the cheap paperbacks is that they are hard to see on the shelf. They are too little, get lost behind or inside other books, the spines are so narrow the call # label can't be seen, and the title is too little to read. Hence, they don't get used. And they are a nightmare to inventory! Perhaps, as some have suggested, they could be stored in little bins with like creatures (maybe all the mammal books together)and then they'd at least get looked at. But when my collection policy gets revised, it will probably specifially exclude books of this type. I may even donate a lot of the ones that we have to the classrooms or the children's hospital.
