US Senator Reed's School library Amendment Bill on
the U. S. Senate Floor
I received the following email from ALA forwarded by
'NOLA' We need to take action now. Using the contact
tp://capwiz.com/ala/home/ it is quite easy to send
Ohio's 2 Senators an email. I have sent the sample
letter below to both.
Please try and do the same.
Thanks

In this issue:
Labor-HHS-Education Bill on Senate Floor Tomorrow;
Call on Your Senators to Support of Reed School
Library Amendment!

Today, October 30, the Senate will take up
consideration of FY2002 Labor-HHS-Education
Appropriations bill, S. 1536 at 10:00
am with no votes scheduled before 2:30pm. Likely
amendments to S. 1536 could include the Reed School
Libraries Amendment.

ACTION NEEDED!
Please call your Senators in their home offices and
ask them to support the school library amendment!
Senators' home office contact numbers can be found at:
http://capwiz.com/ala/home/.

Here is my sample email. Feel free to cut, paste and
edit:

I am a school library media specialist. Because I
work with students every day, I am urging you on their
behalf to continue to support the Senate
FY2002 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill, S.
1536 up for a vote today.
Also please support an amendment to S. 1536 for the
Reed School Libraries Amendment. This ammendment will
provide much needed books for Ohio's school
libraries.

No student should graduate from elementary or
secondary school without the ability to do research on
a wide variety of topics. It is our responsibility as
school library media specialists to teach students not
only how to find proper research materials, but also
how to assess what constitutes good research
materials. Books are neeed for students to read
and apply researcg skills.

In many schools, the Internet connections have opened
up the area of electronic research, but that alone
cannot suffice. Students need to have
the availability of up-to-date books, magazines,
reference books, encyclopedias, atlases and other
basic materials available in a well-stocked
and well-maintained library.

Research has shown that one size does not fit all in
terms of what students enjoy reading. Thus a school
library with a wide variety of materials is
important to students, from early readers to high
school students. In many states, collections are
woefully out of date and full of material that is
incorrect and biased.

The school library resources language in the Senate
bill would bring equality, information and achievement
to students across the country. In fact, research
shows that when students have a well-equipped school
library with a trained school library media
specialist, achievement scores improve.
This is, after all, what we want for all our children.
Please support the Senate language on school library
resources. Please help Ohio's students by providing
the needed resources.

Thank you
