Once again thank you so very much for the quick reply.

I used to have trouble shutting my computers down with win98. Have you tried
resetting the power settings? Here is what you do:

1. RIGHT click your muse on the desktop
2. Choose properties
3. At the bottom of the dialog box (under energy saving features of monitor)
slick "settings"
4. Under "power schemes", choose "Home/Office Desk"
5. Click "apply"

Our computers had been set at "always on" - so the computers would never turn
off. There are may computer techs who are adament that you should never shut
a computer down. The reason is because the power surge that occurs when you
do a cold boot can easily cause damage to a computer. The theory is that it
is much better to keep the computer always on and then simply do the restart
procedure once in ahile. We use a modified procedure here. We leave the
computers
on all week, and do a complete shut down over the weekends and over holidays.

Perhaps this is not what is needed for your computers - but it is what worked
for ours.

I have a similar problem at home with my new last year Gateway running
Windows Me. The Gateway suggestion was to go into Start-up and eliminate
any programs I didn't need running constantly in the background. I can
still access them from START. This worked three consecutive times while I
had tech support on the line. Of course it only worked about 2 out of 3
times thereafter. I added exiting my scanner, and instant messaging and
disconnecting my DSL connection, plus turning off the DSL modem, printer
and speakers before shut down. I now shuts down immediately about 4 out of
5 times. The other times it gives me an error message about a windows
protection area and tells me I will have to restart the computer. Of
course by the time it gets to that point the only way to restart is to turn
it off and "restart" using the switch so I just delay the restart until the
morning. It adds a minute of Scan Disk to the morning start-up but at
least I'm not running the machine 24/7.

Michele,

I don't know much about the inner workings of the computers, but at the
Microsoft Download Website, there is a patch that just came out on Nov. 1
and says the Plug and Play can disrupt system operation. Is this the patch
you already downloaded? I don't know if this will help or not.
Here is the website:

I think I can solve your problem. I have the same problem in my media center
and what I have to do is at the start menu instead of going to shut down I go
to log off and I log off first. The long on symbol comes back up and I just
press cancel. Then I go back to the start menu and click shut down. It
works; it takes twice as long to shut the computers down; but they do shut
down. If I have not been clear - email me back and I will try to be clearer.
Hope this works. Nelle Boyce, Media Specialist; Hunters Creek Middle

This is a windows 98, second edition problem. There is a patch that is
supposed to solve the problem that can be downloaded from Microsoft's web
site. Unfortunately, you have to periodically reinstall the patch. I have a
personal Dell computer that has Microsoft 98 ME installed and does not have
the
same shutdown problems.

We had to keep playing with a few at school- all different vendors. I
can't remember for sure, but I believe turning off the active desktop
did it for most. The newer machines (Dells) haven't had the problem, but
the version of 98 is different!

Since your license covers any version of 98, see if you can reload
windows with the latest version. Our district tech support had a later
copy. Failing that, perhaps begging from Dell or purchasing a cd only
from an education retailer of W98 ( I believe the media is about $15.00
- but it would be well worth it to me, I hated having them freeze at
shut down).

Good luck.
