Why Mosquitos Buzz in People's ears: A West African Folk Tale, Written
by Verna Aardema, ill. By Leo and Diane Dillon A moral tale of jungle
justice imposed on a foolish and mischievous mosquito. Colorful.

Personally, I love "Faithful Elephants" (older readers) because of it's
powerful anti-war message. Of course, you can never go wrong with Dr.
Seuss - our HS kids love him!

I started with the Caldecotts, and some children's classics. I used the
book "Worth a thousand words" by Bette D. Ammon and Gale Sherman to try
to tie books to the curriculum. There are also some good websites with
lists for older readers. I have found that folklore, and variations on
folklore are popular. Dr Stan Steiner at Boise State University has a
website with a lot of links for literature, or he would actually be an
excellent resource. He is known as the 'Bookman' around the valley.
He is at: http://education.boisestate.edu/ssteine/.
I have about 700 picture books in a junior high library, and everyone
loves them!
