My 9-12 high school has decided to incorporate a book for summer reading that EVERYONE will read, faculty and students. That book will then be the subject of discussion and possibly other activities during the school year. I would love to hear from any schools who have done this before and, even if you haven't, suggest a title that would be appropriate for a school wide reading. Also, if you have done this before successfully, what kinds of activities went along with the reading? We are thinking that if we choose a book whose author is alive we might invite that author to speak to kick off the reading. We would like something that will cross age barriers, the curriculum, have a high appeal to teenagers, and stimulate discussion. Several titles have already been suggested. They are: The Color of Water by James McBride; Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom; and The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw. Any others? TIA as always! -- Robin S.
