My guide Great Books for Girls (Ballantine, 1997) annotates more than 600 books for ages 3-14 that feature nontraditional roles for girls, women and (yes) talking female animals. The main characters are involved in sports, science, business, adventure, and survival stories. They are detectives, dragon-slayers, explorers, and leaders of all kinds. As a children's librarian for 17 years, I wanted to offer parents, teachers, and librarians a quick way to find books with strong female characters. I've updated the guide, and a new one will be published by Ballantine next May. My guide Great Books for Boys includes books with nontraditional roles (as well as about 100 books about girls) but it is mainly aimed at getting boys to read more.
