My post is repeated below with the replies following. Thank you so much for your help! If I have searchable information that I want in my Marc records, where do I put it? In the 520 summary, or where? For example, a book I have has state information that I might need but it doesn't show it in the Marc so I want to add it in. Thanks! Most information statements from the book can be placed in a 500 field with quotes. I put lots of info in 520. Many times it is just a string of words I think they might search. "Includes music, food, dance..." It depends on the kind of information you are adding as to which 5xx field you use. But, as a guide, if you want that information to stay permanently in your record and you are unsure that it would belong in a standard record, consider using a 590 field. The 59x fields are considered local notes fields. If you ever send your data out for authority or other maintenance, these fields are usually left untouched. But other standard fields are not so immune. This can also affect subjects. Whenever we add subjects here, we use the 69x fields. 650 fields get overwritten if they do not match a standard authority. The answer is .... that depends. What does your opac allow to be searched? If your opac will allow the note fields (500, etc.) to be searched, the 500 (general note) would be best. If the information can be formatted as a subject, then one of the subject fields would be better. If this isn't helpful, send me an example of the information, and I'll try to help. If you want the info accessible to the public, searching by keyword will pick up your comments in the "Notes" and "Comment" tags. However, if this is something that you would rather not have available on an OPAC, you can use the Categories option when you add a copy of a particular book. For example, if you have a list of books you use each year to teach a concept you can name a category something like, "Responsbility" and when you need these books, you can search by Category. -- DaShannon Lovin Blanchester High School Library Media Specialist lovind@blanchester.k12.oh.us =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
