Dear George Anne,
How many staff do you have?
How many hours do you work?
How many classes come to the library?
How many items do you have?
By knowing this you can plot a schedule.
Get a big A3 sheet with the time slots for the week (overview)
give each staff number a colour
plot the staff that are not needed to assist with classes comming and going
to give them their admin time, cataloguing, processing items etc
Rotate each staff member to shelving shifts, shelf reading. Make sure that
you get to do some as well as this keeps a collection map in your head and
also it helps for reference inquiries and the keeping a tag on the state of
the shelves and state of the items.
I ensure that I have time as the Teacher Librarian to do my basic tasks,
original cataloguing, viewing items on approval with sales reps, lesson
planning and preparation and a meeting with my staff member
On opening the library my library officer or myself, if i have time do the
shelving.
During the day we shelve and tackle a shelf at a time to shelf read.
Shelf read to the definitive at the end of each term, so that the holdings
are in good order for the commencement of the new term. This is an all hands
on deck job.
Basically, here, housekeeping chores are done in the morning before the
classes start, and at the end of the day.
Each day has a different focus.
Monday all the library admin chores and a general tidy.
Tuesday, Shelving, covering, any at point of need tasks as well as all the
classes (6) from 8.30 am - 2.15
Wed (1/2 day 8.30 -11.30am) shelving and tidy and 4 classes
Thursday cataloguing, shelving . 8.30 -10.30 is free of timetabled classes
and we can get a chunk of work completed before the classes after recess.
Have fun
Peta
