Thanks for all your suggestions. I was asked to compile a hit to
share. We will preview and select one.
     Suggested books were:

How about Toughboy and sister by Kirkpatrick?

several of you suggested Earthquake Terror by Peg Kehert and also her
     "Pet Club" Frightmares series
and the other one on disasters.

You might take a look at 'Danger Guys' the first in a 3 run series.
Written by Tony Abbott. Lightweight (short, RL 3.6) but has all the
classic attributes + humor so kids get into them. A short easy read
allows kids to concentrate on the plot, characters, setting, language,
rather than struggling for meaning. Affords more time to do extensions
     also.

Also, there was a list of all the state awards (or rather a site with
links) mentioned end of last month. Checking the winners of various
states would give you a bunch of 'winning choices'

This summer a series of books came out by Gordon Korman. The name of
the series is "Island". The names of the individual books are
"Shipwreck", "Survival" and "Escape". They're about a group of kids
that survive a shipwreck and must survive on an island that they think
is deserted. The reading level placed on the back was grade four, and
     I think that's about right.

Our MN Children's choice award winner (Maud Hart Lovelace) for 1999
was Danger in the Desert, by T S Fields.
You might also think about White Water, by P J Petersen.

     Thanks again,
