This is what I have, although it is not an email and I don't have a specific
source ...
If the world was a village with just 1000 people there would be 60 North
Americans, 80 South Americans. 546 Asians, 86 Africans, 210 Europeans and 18
Australians.
700 of them would be non-white; 300 of them would be white, 300 would be
Christians, 60 would own over half the total wealth, 500 would not have
enough to eat, 600 would live in the slums, and 700 could not read or write.
If you, or anyone else can add other stats or provide the source of the info
I would be grateful. The population figures are a bit simple I think
because although they add up to 1000 (and there were 18 000 000 Aussies when
this was first calculated), there are 4 -5 million Pacific Islanders
(including New Zealanders) not included. I also heard a spokesperson for
UNHCR say there are something like 23 million refugees, although they may
well have been included in the racial breakdown. Nevertheless, it does help
paint a graphic picture to help the kids understand that the world is a
little larger than their neighbourhood.
