I doubt that anyone is walking around with finger to lips saying SHHHH. What we are talking about is learning to use appropriate indoor voices to speak to someone sitting just across the table from them. So that the group at the next table may use the same voice level and be heard without interference. This is a skill that they will also use in such places as nice restaurants. No one wants the library to be as quiet as the funeral parlor, but it should be less noisy than the cafeteria or playground at lunch time. I tell teens that if they are sitting at a table six or more feet from the desk and I can clearly hear every detail of their conversation they are too loud. I too have played music and or TV, but if I can't hear the media sound, the conversations are too loud. Dorothy E. Tissair, M.L.S.
