Dear Netters: Do you have this problem? During the past 5 years more and more of the library's budget has been going to subscription databases. As a result, we are able to offer our students access to these library resourses 24 hr/day 7 days/wk. This is what the Technology Director wanted and I also agreed that the students needed access to these very good reference resources. I went back to school and took 8hrs of graduate work in web design for teachers. Many hours are spent maintaing a web site that will meet the informational needs of both the students and staff. Since I am a solo librarian in a high school of over 2000 students I wanted to be able to offer the library "curriculum" on the web so that is would be accessible when I am not. The PROBLEM: The tech director will not agree to make the library web page the default page on the computers in the library and the library's computer lab. When explorer is opened the students see the District's web site. They then must click on the school's site. Then they can click on the library's link. Then they get to choose the library resourses they want: catalog, databases, web resources, or research help, etc. The kids just don't do it. They open up explorer, go straight to the url box at the top of the page and type in the address of their favorite search engine. Even when I'm in the library and tell them how to get to the library's resources they don't go there. And it's not only the students. The teachers don't use the resources either. I want to go back one more time to the District Tech Director and plead my case. I would like to have some information about what other high schools are doing. Would you please answer these few questions? Do you offer your students access to subscription databases? Is your catalog online? Available from your web page? Do your library computers open to the District Web Page, School web page, or the Library Web Page? Suggestions and advice are welcomed!!! Thank you. I'll post a hit if there is interest.
