Dear All, I was going through my saved messages last night and found this. Someone had inquired about it last year. I found the story in Highlights in the 80s and have been using it since. The Tiny Little Witch Get an large rectangular piece of orange construction paper and begin story. It was the last day of October one Fall when a tiny witch was wandering in the woods looking for a home. It was getting cooler every night and the hammock that she slept in outdoors offered very little warmth. Every nook and cranny that she found was occupied by an animal who did not want to share it with a witch- no matter how nice she was. Finally the blustery wind blew a piece of orange paper her way. "This looks like it would make a good house", she said. (Hold the paper widthwise and fold the short side in half. Keep the open edge facing up). She folded the paper and took out her trusty scissors that no good witch would be without. She decided that she needed to make a roof. So she cut a triangle off in each corner. (Make sure that the triangles are from the open NOT the folded edge). Then she decided that she needed a door to get in the house. So she cut a door into the house. (Cut a rectangle onto the left side of folded edge) When she walked into the house her hat fell off! So she cut a triangle into the top of the door. (Make the triangle by extending one side of the door and cutting down diagonally to the top of other side of the door) Now when she walked into the house her hat stayed on her head! Once inside, the little witch felt very warm and comfortable in the house but it was very dark. "I need some light," she said. So she cut out a window to let in the light. (Fold paper slightly in right section with most paper and cut out a rectangular box through 4 thickness' of paper. You'll have a window on both sides of the "house".) Now her house was warm and snug and very bright. So the witch set out to find wood for the fire for the winter. She collected wood and kindling all day. Late that afternoon she was finished and was ready to go into her warm, snug house when she heard a small cry. She thought it was an animal who was hurt. She was a kind witch so she tried to find out who was crying. She found a small ghost crying behind a tree. She went up to the little ghost and asked him what was wrong. He told her that cold and looking for a home for the winter. She offered to take him in but he said, "NO, everyone is afraid of me". "I'm not", said the friendly witch, "I'm a witch and everyone is afraid of me". The ghost didn't believe her. So the witch said, I'll make you your own door so you'll feel welcome". (Cut a small rectangle in the middle of the folded edge) Then the ghost believed her. So the witch went in her door and the ghost went into his door and they both wished you (open the paper) a Happy Halloween! The paper should look like a jack-o-lantern. Try it a few times to get it right. Happy Halloween - early, Jo ******************************************************* Josephine G.
