That was quick! Thanks everyone.
Here is the hit for Biographies. You are all wonderful. Many people
recommended Enslow and books by David Adler the rest are below.

***************************************
I recommend Lerner for biographies. Childrens Press may have some
also. They have several series of biographies at different reading
levels. Lerner has more of the historical biographies; Childrens has more
up-to-date ones. The only problem I have with the biographies about
current celebrities is a lot of them are so shallow. There's very little
information in them.

Last spring we had Greg Brown the author for the
Positively for Kids series come to our school. He
writes sports biographies that have been well received
at my school. You can get info on Greg and his books
by going to www.authorsillustrators.com. These books
have great photographs and illustrations, timelines,
maps, etc.
****************************
Enslow and Chelsea House are great for the 6-8th graders.
*********************************
,I would recommend Millbrook press in New Milford, CT. Their
Connecticut representative is great and I am sure that you will find them
just as good in Vermont. You can also place an order at
www.millbrookpress.com.

I'm in my second year in New Boston NH. I've enjoyed the author biographies
I've bought. It's fun to share biographical information along with the
books. I think I bought all of the Something About The Author series. Now
I'm buying other easy reading biographies about well known kids authors. If
I had lots of extra money I'd ask the kids to help me choose sports figure
biographies. As it is the next big purchase is easier books about
presidents and explorers.
*******************************
The biographies that are most popular in our K-6 school
are presidents, sports stars, music stars, discoverers
(for school projects), and those who faced/overcame
adversity (Helen Keller, Anne Frank, Martin Luther King,
Jr., Louis Braille, etc.).
****************************
Try Abdo and Daughters Publishing. They have excellent titles and also
great book processing.
*********************
We just ordered several biographies by Bridgestone Press (within the Capstone
Press catalog). They are geared toward young students (3rd grade or so) and
have marvelous photographs and large print. They will also be very useful for
our older ESL students that can't read fluently in English yet. I think
Bridgestone has a set of biographies with illustrations (which is OK), but
the ones with photographs are very nice. They have section headings, table of
contents, and an index. I think there are about 15 available.
****************************
There are many many good biographies. One about Wilma Rudolph comes to mind
and a new one on Ruby Bridges. For the older ones one of the best books I've
ever read is called In My Hands - about a Polish girl during the War.
Couldn't put it down.
********************************
I have a middle school library and recommend Chelsea House Publishers for
Biography. They have many different series that cover many different types
of people - sports, women, history, african american, etc.
************************
Compass Point books has a wonderful series of biographies at a primary
reading level. We have several and both teachers and students like them.
***********************************
For the primary age students, The Picture Book of .... series by David Adler
is very good & there are a lot of them.
*************************************
I too am in the same situation with looking for biographies for the little
ones. Children's Library Resources has a nice selection of biographies for
the range you are looking for and the processing is free! Their number is
888-298-1465.
****************************
Order through regent, they are quick and fast, and easy to order from.
They should have a couple biography pages in their pamphlet. Or, check
them out on the internet.
******************************
I found these authors to do good biographies: Nathan Aaseng, Carol Greene,
Jim Hargrove, Patricia and Fredick McKissack, Milton Metzer.

Enslow, Chelsea House, and Children's Press all do great series of
biographies. The catalogs have reading levels and interest levels that I
have found the be right on target. I've not been disappointed in any of the
books I've gotten from these sources.
*********************************
I would recommend you stay away from series biographies as they are usually
pretty shallow, except for a few such as the picture books by Adler and the
Artist's series by Venezia. See if you have some of these titles: Jean
Fritz's about the different revoluntionary hereos; Russell Freedman's books;
and if you do want a good series on the presidents, the ones by Children's
Press(Encyclopedia of presidents)are pretty good. I'm out of time or I could
go on.
*******************************
The author autobiographies published by Richard C. Owens are wonderful. I
have Under My Nose (Lois Ehlert), Firetalking (Pat Polacco), One Man Show
(Frank Asch), Best Wishes (Cynthia Rylant) and maybe a few more.
*********************************
Matt Christopher has started publlishing Biographies of famous sports
figures. His new one on Tony Hawk is really popular in my library
************************************
There is a website which has a searchable database of award winning books,
and you can create a list of books by various criteria, one of which is genre
such as biography, as well as age level. I printed off a list for biographies
for myself since I, too, needed bio's. This is one way to get a list of books
you know are quality, since they are only selected from award winning lists.
The site is below. Once you get there, click on "search the database" and
select your criteria.

I know of an excellent series of biography books, but I can't think of the
publisher right now. They are called "Biographies for Beginners". Each
book highlights about 5 well-known celebrities/athletes/current newsmakers.
They are published twice a year. They are geared more to the younger grades
as a way to get them interested in nonfiction books.
