Thank you all who helped me out on this one. I was brain dead when I got the
request. I already have some of the suggested titles on the shelves of my
library.

Try the Researching American History series, from Discovery Enterprises @
978-287-5401. We have The Declaration of Independence and The
Revolutionary War, as well as others on other topics. Very readable by 5th
graders.

UXL has a set of reference materials called _Colonial America Reference
Library_. One of the volumes which can be bought separately is _Colonial
America: Primary Sources_. ($49) It is a good middle school level resource
and I would think that a 5th grader who needed a primary source could
probably handle the material. (fran-this is the one I have if you want to
borrow it)

Cobblestone Publications (1-800-821-0115) has a series called Teaching with
Primary Sources. I have used some and found them to be great. One of the
titles is Archaeology of Early Colonial life. Unfortunately, I don't have
personal experience with this particular title, but you might want to check
it out.

"We were there too" by Philip Hoose is a fine new
children-in-american-history that includes primary sources.(Fran-I have this
one too)

I have a book from Greenwood publishing:called Debating the Issues in
Colonial Newspapers by David Copeland. It is a big book that is filled with
topics that were important back then and the articles from various newspapers
that discussed that topic.
My only qualm is that the articles are written in the vernacular of the
times.....deadly! (verbose) and you have to rely on the paragraph that
explains it all to you.
