Thank you to all who replied regarding my request for where students
could write or go online to obtain state information. Here are the
replies:

You can start with www.50states.com
www.ipl.org, the Internet Public Library.
http://www.gettingaway.com/directory/us/tourismoffices.html

States can be found following this pattern:
http://www.state.fl.us/ -- Florida
http://www.state.ne.us/ -- Nebraska
http://www.state.ca.us/ -- California
http://www.state.az.us/ -- Arizona

I went to the websites of all of the 50 states and for
about 47 or 48 of them, I found an online form to fill out to request
tourist information.

In the States of the U.S. section of the World Almanac at the end of
each state
listed is usually an address, phone number and/or web site for the
information
your students are looking for. They use the address in
the world almanac. There are about 4 states that list no address. We
have
them just write to the Department of Tourism, State Capital, State, Zip
code.

http://www.towd.com/ Tourism Offices Worldwide Directory on
the internet that we sometimes use especially if the almanac address is
incorrect and we get the letter returned.

I asked my local AAA Agency

I just did this with my fifth grade computer class. Most state tourism
agencies are easily located on the web. We just typed in the "state
name+tourism", i.e. Wisconsin+tourism (no spaces), on the Google search
engine. Don't be fooled by the .com sites, most of them eventually lead
to
a free packet that just needs a name & address typed in. We did first
try
for the state agencies [government] first though. The only states we
had
any difficulty with were Missouri - it lists a 1-800 number that you
call;
their website is not interactive. We also had a problem with the Hawaii

site - couldn't get it to load at school - blamed the old, slow
computer.
However, when I tried to follow-up at home, much faster G3, it still
wouldn't load. I believe the teacher has received most of the packets
we ordered in late September. Good luck. And whether you are doing it
yourself or having students do it, allow plenty of time to negotiate
your way through the sites.

Thank you again to all who replied!
