Dear Mary-Ann The most successful library programs are those that are closely connected to what is happening in the classrooms, so head off to ask your teachers what they are doing and tie your theme to that. If you are looking for the sorts of skills that we expect students to be able to manage, have a look at http://www.palmdps.act.edu.au > Staffroom (from menu under main graphic) > Key Learning Areas (bottom drawer of filing cabinet) > and then click on Information Literacy from the Profile Outcomes folder. The Australian National Profiles recognise that there are many abilities within a classroom and so levels tend to span about 18 months of schooling...therefore students in Yr 6 would tend to be bridging Levels 3 and 4. Show these to the teachers - print them if you wish - and ask the teachers which skills they would like you to target to support what they are doing. That way, you ease their load and have students doing things that are connected to the rest of their curriculum and therefore have a purpose. Discipline disappears when kids are engaged in what they are doing. As a new librarian, I've been searching the net and wishing for something like this. So far, I wouldn't have much--if anything--of quality to contribute, but I think it's a wonderful idea and would welcome this kind of resource from you veterans. And in another year or so, I'll probably be ready to contribute. At this point I'd also be interested in how experienced librarians choose their themes. I'm at a K-8 library of at-risk students with lower skill levels and welcome ideas. Thanks.
