Jeran and all- My first library job was in the NY public library. In orientation they told us of the long history of immigrants who continue to use the public library as "the people's university". There are many famous writers who wrote their whole books while sitting in the huge Central Reading room at the 42nd St. building. During the Great Depression of the 1930s the NYPL recorded their highest per building circulation statistics as many unemployed people flocked to the libraries for FREE materials. Of course there were fewer other sources of entertainment then. I thought this information would be interesting the share with your students.
