Last year was my first year in this school district, being responsible for 2
large elementary schools. With a generous budget and large collection, as
well as a new curriculum in each building, I found it very time consuming to
put together orders. So, I sponsored a Media Fair for staff in December.
I invited 4 representatives from book publishers (World Book, Follett, then
2 reps who each handled 3 or 4 publishers). They came early in the morning
with a wonderful variety of books/samples related to curriculum themes which
were displayed in the Media Center. I created a "wish list" form the
teachers could fill in, which the reps took to create a quote. I provided
bagels, coffee, muffins and CHOCOLATE (an absolute necessity at ANY
get-together!), and I used holiday tablecloths and tableware. _The
Nutcracker_ played softly on the CD player all morning. It was set up 1/2
hour before school began, and if teachers didn't have a prep time that
morning, I offered to cover their classroom for 15-20 minutes. It was a big
hit with the staff, and not only made the ordering easier, it opened the
doors of communication wider.
