Forgive the dupliation, everyone, if you have heard these suggestions
from me before.

However there may be many new teachers struggling with bahvior
management,
so I decided to post to the whole group.

To quiet a class, say, "If you can hear me, raise your hand" This
usually
gets everyone paying attention again.

If they are still rambunctious, you can expand the commands using
Simon
Says like directives such as, "If you can hear me , put your finger
on
your nose."

"If you can hear me put your hands on your elbows" etc.

Kids like to move, and the break in the lesson by TPR (total physical
response) commands helps them focus on the teacher again.

-----------------------
Another technique is to clap out a sequence. The class must echo the
sequence by clapping the same rythem you modelled. Do it a few times.
Vary the rythem. It stops the kids from chatting and not paying
attention.

You should teach the kids before you use the clapping technique, how
you
expect them to perform when you clap out
a rythem, and the purpose of it--to quiet the class down and regain
control of the class.

---------------------
Kids sometimes listen more quietly when they have a coloring page to
color. But sometimes sharing the colors causes distractions, so
you'll
have to see how it works with our particilar group.
---------------------
Using a prop to get started can generate interest. For example I used
a
real bird's nest when I read Eres Tu mi Mama, the Spanish translation
of
Are You my mother by P.D. Eastman.
---------------------
Having the kids repeat the recurring sentence in a story such as in
the
Very Hungry Caterpillar: "But he was still hungry" keeps them
involved.
----------------------
Using an activity that links to the book can spark interest and
captivate
the kids.

For example when I read "Little Blue and Little Yellow" by Leo Lionni
I
used blue and yellow jello disolved in 2 clear plastic cups. One cup
was
half full with blue liquid, and the other had yellow liquid. I showed
the
class how the blue and yellow mixed by pouring them in to another cup
together to demonstrate how blttle blue and little turned green when
they
hugged.

Jello is a good medium to use because it is not toxic if someone
drinks
it.
-----------------------
Another craft the children liked was dipping apple halves into jello
of
different colors, which had been sprinkled on cookie sheets. They
liked
mixing the colors. Some made "rainbow" colored apples dipping their
piece
in several colors. That craft would also go well with Mouse Paint by
Ellen Stoll Walsh.
----------------------
Sometimes I have found that the children will behave even if the story
is
a little above their level if I promisr them they can help me use the
commercial puppets I have for the Very Hungry Caterpillar, The old
lady
who swallowed the fly, and Brown bear, brown bear what do you see by
Bill
Martin, Jr.
----------------------
The best books for short attention spans have only one or a few word
per
page, but great illustraions. Denise Flemming's books are excellent.
Mice Squeek We Speak by Arnold Shapiro was a popular selection. Arf
Beg
CAtch is a great ABC picture book.
----------------------
5 Little Monkeys jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow was a big
hit. We
sang the song after we read the book. It has actions that I
demonstrated
(calling the doctor, hitting her head when a monkey fell out of bed).
The
last page shows the mother jmping on the bed, so we added a erse where
the
mother fell out and bumped her hear.. This time the CHILDREN called
the
doctor and the doctor said no more MAMA'S jumping on the bed.
----------------------
Open them shut them
Open , shut them
Give a little clap.
Open shut them
lay them in your lap.

Have the kids do it while you say it and demonstrate it. They will end
up
sitting with thehir hands in their laps ready to listen to the story.

---------------------
Another one:
Eyes on the ceiling,
Eyes on the floor,
Eyes on me
And I'll tell you more.

Good luck!
