Ironically, I didn't respond to Diane's original question, because I was in
the middle of writing an article about our most "problem patrons" -- AKA,
the teachers who consistently *impose* on us in one way or another. I am
not necessarily teacher-bashing, rather I am explaining that MANY of us ar=
e
frequently forced to cope with 3 general categories of problems:
1. collection collisions
2. facility frazzles
3. personnel proximities. -- which is where the perception that we also
function as the 'media therapist' is addressed.
It's the constant complainers that really get to me; the ones who come in
almost every day and dump *their* woes into *my* working day/space. I have
found a partial solution: a big stamp pad, and a pile of things that need t=
o
be stamped (we can all always find *something* that needs identification).=
=20
I laughingly tell the moaners that I=92m willing to listen, as long as the=
y =96
in return-- help me out by =93working=94 while they wail. The wise ones se=
e it
as a fair trade; the perennial whiners get insulted and leave me alone!=20

Understand : I DO think the library SHOULD be the heart of the school, and
i'm always delighted that people see our place as a friendly space.=20
However, it is also important to let the loiterers know that WE have work t=
o
do, too, and that their prep period is not necessarily our "free" period.

Getting off my soapbox now. . . .
(oh yeah -- the article will be in the November issue of Teacher-Librarian)
