A teacher in my school has prepared a list of books for his ninth graders to choose from for outside reading as part of a reading workshop program he's running in his class throughout the year. There were many books that I wasn't familiar with (I don't know where he got the titles from) and a number of books that I thought too juvenile for ninth graders. So I have two requests: 1. Your opinion as to whether or not these books should be on a list for ninth graders One-Eyed Cat (Paula Fox) The Village by the Sea (Paula Fox) Maniac McGee (J. Spinelli) Child of the Owl (L. Yep) Dragon's Gate (Yep) Hiroshima (Yep) House of Stairs (Sleator) Petey (Michaelson) Number the Stars (Lowry) 2. Suggestions of books for ninth grade boys. I know we have covered this topic previously, but I wanted to ask for suggestions for books that you know (from personal experience) would be a hit with 9th grade boys and those which are not the ones we always mention when we talk about books for boys. That is, I already have titles by Cormier, Crutcher, Lynch, Jay Bennett, Walter Dean Myers, Gary Paulsen, Rob Thomas, as well as the famous adult fantasy/sci-fi/horrow writers (Card, King, etc). They don't have to be YA books; in fact, I would love to have some adult titles (the only one I recognize on this teachers list in that category is Russell Banks' Rule of the Bone). Thanks! I will post a hit in a few days.
