Dear Sybil Don't have a lesson plan but copyright would be a good issue to explore! And there are plenty of resources that would get them thinking. There was a great piece of research from Joy McGregor from the Women's University of Texas that showed the more a student copied and pasted from a website the higher the grade ... McGregor, J. (1998) Do Scribes Learn? Copying and Information Use in School Library Media Quarterly Online http://www.ala.org/aasl/SLMQ/scribes.html And there are all those sites that students can download completed papers from like http://www.schoolsucks.com Perhaps you could set up a scenario where the students have to decide if that's fair, what they think the teacher should do in that case, what they should/ would do if they know a student has cheated in this way and how the situation might be avoided. I'd also throw in why students feel the need to copy and paste and /or use these services but that might open up a whole can of worms about the value of assessment and grading and whether the systems in place meet the intended outcomes of the learning, and you might not want to go there :>} Because the issues are so relevant to their current situation and have implications for their personal performance and they can put themselves in the picture so easily, it should be a great starting point for some interesting debate. It's also non-political, non-racial, non-sexist, non-religious and you couldn't be accused of bias. :>} Kia ora Barbara Barbara Braxton Teacher Librarian Palmerston District Primary School PALMERSTON ACT 2913 AUSTRALIA T. 02 6205 7241 F. 02 6205 7242 E. barbara@austarmetro.com.au W. http://www.palmdps.act.edu.au =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
