Target: 4-5th grade reads

Our 4th grade teachers are looking for a book with a boy as the main
character  taking place during the westward movement.  I can only find
"Westward to home-Joshua's diary" which they would prefer no to use as the
book they are currently reading is also in diary format.  I found on
amazon.com "On to Oregon" but am unfamiliar with it and am wondering if it
would be too hard to read out loud.

 They are also looking for a book similar to Island of the Blue Dolphins or
the Cay. For a unit on oceanography.  I suggested Windcatcher or Voyage of
the Frog .

Our school is for gifted student so 5-6th grade reading levels are about
where we would like these books to be.  Any suggestions?
