Friends: A third grade teacher has asked me to find resources on the symbols of America. This is my first year at this particular school and the collection is very weak in some areas (I'm putting it as nicely as I can . . . !), especially American history on an elementary level. Most of our reference works are appropriate for middle or high school students. For example, we have the Britannica, but no World Book encyclopedia. . . I need book OR website suggestions. I've already given her the official White House website (which has a picture and biography of First Lady, Laura Bush). She'd like books featuring national monuments and famous buildings, etc. She's looking for more than just the eagle, flag, etc. I found the coinage and paper money info in an almanac. She's not looking for state symbols (we have plenty of info on that). Your suggestions will help us develop our "shopping list" for this area of the collection, and in the mean time she can also use your ideas and check the public library's collection.
