We no longer have Home Ec or Family and Consumer Science at our school,
but until 2 years ago when it was discontinued, our teacher always
brought them to the library for a lesson from me on "Reading to and
Book Selection for Young Children." I included why children should be
read to, what to emphasize, what NOT to do (NEVER use reading as a
punishment), how to determine reading level (looking for "RL"), the
various book awards to look for and the history of reading and publishing
for young children (a great source of history of children's
reading/publishing was just an ordinary old encyclopedia) and the role of
the dictionary for young readers.

I always showed examples for every age, had posters and bookmarks for
giveaways for major children's book awards.

It was probably the lesson that produced the most consistently positive
response of any lesson I've ever taught. And oh yes, <grin> I AWAYS
showed them my college textbook on literature for children...I'm not at
work and cannot remember the exact title....but it ALWAYS seemed to
impress them and yes, yes, even amaze them that there is actually a
college course on reading to children!!! That seemed to make me "an
expert" as nothing else ever has!

Hope you find this as rewarding a lesson as I did.
