I do not know HOW to turn off the html on this AOL acct., so I hope this gets
posted and if so, it doesn't cause much consternation. My question is this:
As a first year librarian (high school), I have had a lot of money to spend
with almost no knowledge of WHAT to order. I have ordered about 1300 books
this year, some of which turned out to be VERY good and a few I had doubts
about. I realize there are lists for fiction. I am talking about gray area
stuff in the non-fiction. For example, on my last 63-title order from
Follett, I ordered from the young adult and youth lists (for h.s. age) and
got 3 books I think I will return. One is a story of a gay boy (all cartoon
style) and his odyssey from contracting HIV to full blown AIDS. THe second
one looked like a good mystery but was full of the f--- word. The third was
just too abstract and too high a vocab. level for these kids. How much of
what we buy is guided by personal prejudice (I think I already know the
answer to that one!) and is there some standard written in concrete somewhere
guiding these choices?
