We received a memo from our coordinator stating he had come across a policy
requiring a "System Policy & Procedure Handbook" for media specialists.
While I have a detailed Handbook for my center on scheduling, circulation,
processing, weeding, copyright, etc., I've never seen or heard of one for the
system. We do have various library media-related policies/guidelines in our
County Policy Manual...but not a "handbook" just for the media center.
Do any of you have such a handbook for your school system? Here in Georgia
we used to have a State Library Handbook that was sent out to all the schools
about 15 years ago. It was just updated recently and put on the web (can't
find the address at this time). I've never heard of a system one though.
Some of the things he said would be in the handbook are:
Mission, Philosophy, Beliefs/Vision, Day by day local media center
operational procedures (circulation, processing of resources, weeding, etc.),
Budget, Curriculum, Ordering procedure, Reports, and Other items of concern.
I told him that some of things would have to be very broad since many of us
have our own way for processing, etc.
If anyone knows of any resources, samples, etc., I would appreciate a copy if
possible.
