Fun Facts Abound! Ideas and sources are listed below. One resource I
had not been familiar with but sounds terrific, is The Whole Library
Handbook 3 by George M. Eberhart, compiler, available on the ALA site.
As for those of you asking about my brochure, I will be happy to send a
copy. I did it in Publisher 2000 which is not readable by other Publisher
versions (I found out the hard way). So I have scanned it as a .jpg (a
picture). Anyone desired a Publisher 2000 version, let me know.

Perhaps a quote about reading would be fun. I love the one that Groucho
Marx says - "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog,
it's too dark to read."

Sue, I have a book at school in the Prof. section I purchased prob. 10 years
ago. It has a lot of historical info., quotes, funny stories, etc. on
libraries. Can't remember the title or publisher, but will look it up when
I go back down to the school this week. I remember one that has always
stuck in my mind that talks about how modern equipment such as the
typewriter, etc. will have on the field of librarianship. Think it was from
late 1800's or early 1900's.

Someone posted this web site a little while back and I thought it had some
good "ammunition" .... not really lighthearted but well put.

Not sure of the exact fact, but there some statistic about more people use
public libraries in a year than visit sports stadiums. Perhaps someone else
will provide the same info.

There are three Whole Library Handbooks that have interesting facts,
statistics - put out by ALA. I read mine and just put yellow stickies on the
pages with interesting information.

Of course if you need to do this soon, you will need to see if anyone near
you has a copy you can borrow, but they are invaluable sources of
miscellaneous
library information.

Have you checked out the Whole Library Handbook compiled by George
Eberhart. It provides statistical information, advice, and curiousa about
libraries. It is published by ALA. I believe that the latest edition is
2000.
It has the word library in 140 different languages, library and book
related quotes, and little stories. A great source to use!

I heard a discussion of Andrew Carnegie on NPR earlier this week. Since he
provided funds for helping communities found hundreds of libraries, his
quote "To die rich is to die disgraced" would be an interesting topic of
discussion. Cobblestone has an entire issue about him. You can find out
more at:
 http://www.cobblestonepub.com/pages/teideaslessonCOBBCarnegie.htm
You also might have a contest to find out about other people in the U.S.
(and in your own community/ county/ state) who were instrumental in the
establishment of public libraries. Once a student finds out about each
library pioneer, give them the pleasant responsibility of choosing a fun
fact or pithy quote. Thus you put the spotlight on student initiative and
research skills.

Do you have any copies of the Whole Library Handbooks (1, 2, etc...) from
ALA? I keep my personal copies in my locker at school so I can pull out
some little zingers now and thtn to amuse the kids and staff.

wonderful. There is another one, but I can't seem to find it.
