My thanks to everyone who sent along very helpful advice regarding the
problem of digital or scanned photos that are too large when received in
an e-mail message. Many asked for a HIT, so here is a summary of the
suggestions that spoke directly to the problem. Thanks again to all who

Is the picture taken with a digital camera, or scanned in? A first
suggestion would be to check the dpi or resolution setting under which
it was produced. You could change the dpi to a smaller number. Or, if
your resolution is set at 1024 x 768, reduce it to a lower setting
before shooting the pics, say 640 x 480. One of these two should help
avoid the problem in the future.
If you have other photos already shot at 1024 x 768, just take them into
an
image editing program and resize them before sending. Most of these
programs
allow you to keep the same ratio of width to height. If not, 640 x 480
is
generally adequate to most purposes, or alternately, 800 x 600.
Try saving the photo as a JPEG before you send it. This will reduce
the original size.
