Earl, thank you for responding. My first thought was to offer the books to
students and teachers, but once I began looking at the books I realized that
I could not set these books for others to take without feeling guilty about
giving someone else books that I would not even take. Nor would I let my
daughters bring these into our house had they been given away at their
school. I do not feel guilty by any means throwing them away, in the trash
is where they belong. I just wasn't sure if there was some "policy" that
says that teachers and students must be offered discards. There is, of
course, no selection, weeding or collection development policy for the
school or in the district. I did speak to the district library coordinator
when I was inquiring about the numerous sets of encyclopedias that I weeding
and was told to put them in a box marked recycle books. I suppose I will do
the same with these.

I wholeheartedly agree that due to the conditions of these books that they
do not belong in anyone's classroom or home. I just did not want to get in
trouble for not offering them to the school community. I will continue my
evening weeding and hopefully no one will be the wiser. Thank you again for
taking the time to share your wisdom.
