Article doesn't mention library (public or school) circulation
statistics. NCES Library Surveys
(http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/libraries/highlights.asp#public) show a 15%
growth in one year. That would take a bit out of the -7% in sales.
Heavier discounts, more paperbacks would also account for some of the
drop. The study the article mentions adds that it is an industry wide
drop, not just children's books, but doesn't discuss the range of the
study or how and what statistics were gathered. Only large publishers,
technical books, picture books?

It is good that it does look at the skills v love of reading debate. But
there is no mention of fiction v non-fiction trends or integration of
reading skills into content areas. And there have been "..enormously
expanded entertainment possibilities..." for many years.

There are a great many people who are not 'book-lovers' but have more
than adequate literacy skills. They may use their time in technical or
professional reading. I think there is also a trend in reading
instruction to focus on non-fiction reading skills. After all, much of
the reading and writing testing focuses that way also.

Note also there is a typo in the booklist.
